Understanding the Concept
BODMAS (sometimes called PEMDAS) is an acronym representing the Order of Operations: Brackets, Orders (powers/roots), Division and Multiplication (left-to-right), and Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right). It dictates the sequence to solve multi-step expressions.
Why Practise This Topic?
Without a universal order of operations, mathematical expressions would be ambiguous. Practising BODMAS teaches children logical sequencing and precision in multi-step problem solving.
Practical Tips for Parents & Teachers
- Have children write the acronym 'BODMAS' at the top of their page as a checklist.
- Encourage rewriting the expression step-by-step, showing each simplified line below the previous one.
- Explain that division and multiplication hold equal priority, solved simply from left to right.
